Help a friendly animal escape a shelter environment. An LGAR foster home provides a stable, loving environment for a dog that has run out of options in the shelter system. You will be providing much needed socialization and basic training that will make your foster dog more appealing for adoption and increase the odds of a successful transition into a permanent home.
Animals who we rescue are usually those who have run out of time because they have been deemed "rescue only" for a variety of reasons, a shelter had no space, the animal has medical needs, or \was not adopted in a certain amount of time.
Look some of the ways your gift can provide for an animal in need:
- Neglected or abused animals that need tender loving care
- Injured animals and/or those recovering from surgery
- Animals suffering from shelter stress in need of a calming home environment
- Older or senior animals that will be more comfortable in a home environment
- Puppies and kittens that require more socialization than available at a shelter
- Puppies and kittens that are too young/immature to be adopted
- Animals with colds or other special needs
- Abandoned mothers that are pregnant
- Any animal on the euthanasia or To Be Destroyed list due to overcrowding in the shelter
Fosters, like pets, come in all shapes and sizes. Some are single and live in a studio in NYC; others have large families and big fenced in property. Some have owned dogs and cats their whole lives, others are novices.
What we look for in fosters though, is one thing: commitment. We see pet guardianship as one built on commitment and trust. There is a life dependent on you, and it’s a responsibility unlike any other.
You Can Make A Difference
Truly there is nothing more inspiring than seeing these amazing animals come full circle; from neglected, abandoned and nameless to healed, healthy and happy surrounded by a new forever family to call their own. Please don’t wait until an animal goes on to the TBD List
Oh My God….Look at that dog on the TBD List!
If you are like many of us, your work in rescue started rather innocently, with your stumbling upon the To Be Destroyed Lists on any one of a dozen different shelter pages. Soon it became an obsession and every waking moment was spent looking at these poor faces that need help RIGHT NOW.
With your heart constantly in your throat, you desperate try to find a way to save a life…every single one of them. But then, one day, you see that face, that one animal that for some reason sucks you in and gets stuck in your head- you just have to rescue him/her from death.
You frantically search for a rescue organization that can pull that animal for you as the minutes slowly tick by toward his/her impending doom. Finally, someone answers your call/email/message and you learn you have to fill out an application, every single page of it and then have all of your references checked and have a home visit-BEFORE they can save the animal for you. It makes total sense you say.
Of course, the rescue needs to be sure that they aren’t putting the dog in another horrible situation – but you just know that you will be approved. Yet, the rescue can’t take that chance so while you respect that process you are now panicked and angry. Not to mention that you have aged 5 years. And while the chances are slim that that his will all come together time, you wait and hope. But there is another way….
APPLY NOW…BEFORE YOU FIND THAT DOG…EVEN IF YOU ARE UNSURE IF YOU WILL EVER BE READY.
Yes, we want your application BEFORE you are frantic. That way IF you ever decide to jump in the pond with us, you-WE- will be ready. No stress, no panic just bliss as you know that once you are approved, you can decide without undue pressure (with our guidance) that NOW IS THE TIME. And we can both breathe a sigh of relief knowing that we didn’t rush into anything and that we made the right match.
Moral of the Story: If you are a good pet owner and know that it is only a matter of WHEN, not IF, go ahead and fill out an application, work with our counselors and take the stress out of the process. Think about it.
